Stepping into therapy can be a worrisome endeavor for some. However, therapy should be a space in which individuals, families, and/or couples can feel safe in expressing inner thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. I work from the perspective that many of our struggles result from unhappy/unsuccessful relationships, either with others or with ourselves. Therefore, I aim to support clients in understanding what relational patterns they employ and then help them begin to use alternative communication skills, relationship skills and new relational patterns. These building blocks and skills can be applied to a variety of life domains wherein there may be discomfort.
Family therapy can be a wonderful place for families to learn the building blocks of positive communication, develop a deeper understanding of each other's feelings, and deepen the bonds of family connections. I work from a systemic perspective in which I help the family to challenge their normal patterns of behavior, beliefs, and roles in the family that may be causing problems. I encourage family therapy as I believe individuals flourish when they are connected to a safe and healthy family base.
Goal oriented and client-directed therapy has been shown to be effective for a variety of different life disruptions such as depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, etc. Individual therapy can be a valuable place to explore one's inner workings and develop new strengths. For issues related to depression, anxiety, and stress management, individual services can offer additional coping skills and an empathic environment in which to learn alternative strategies. For those that have been through a particular traumatic experience, trauma-focused therapy can be very effective to help with nightmares, heightened emotional responses, intrusive memories or flashbacks, and feelings of being hyper-aware.
